TEDx Colombo 2025
For TEDxColombo 2025, themed MADness, the challenge was to visually express the fine balance between chaos and creativity — how wild ideas can transform into powerful narratives. The design draws heavily from Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, reinterpreting the vibrant, layered symbolism of traditional Yaka masks into a contemporary digital expression. This project aimed to create a bold, memorable identity that captures the duality of order and disorder while celebrating the energy of unconventional thinking.

Design Approach
The design process centered around exploring the collision between extremes — structure vs. spontaneity, logic vs. emotion, education vs. play. Inspired by the exaggerated forms of Yaka masks, the visual language evolved into a modern system that feels both unpredictable and intentional. Every design element, from the color palette to the layered illustrations, was crafted to evoke a sense of dynamic tension — a visual metaphor for the “madness” that often drives innovation.

Visual Language
The visual system is built on asymmetry, layering, and bold contrasts. Curved organic shapes overlap with sharp geometric forms to create a sense of controlled chaos. The color palette combines vivid brights with grounded neutrals, reflecting both the energy of new ideas and the stability of thoughtful execution. The mask-inspired forms serve as key graphic elements across all touchpoints — from print to digital — acting as both visual anchors and playful accents throughout the identity system.

Application and Rollout
The identity extended across a full event suite: stage designs, motion graphics, digital collateral, merchandise, social media assets, and printed materials. Each platform leveraged the core visual system while allowing flexibility for variation and surprise — ensuring every touchpoint felt cohesive yet alive with creative energ

Reflection
This project was a personal exploration of how cultural heritage can inform contemporary design narratives. By reinterpreting the visual language of the Yaka masks, the identity bridges tradition and modernity — honoring the past while inviting new conversations around creativity, chaos, and innovation.
